Position Title: OBGYN - Medical Director, Inpatient Obstetrics
Department: Women's & Infants
Reports To: Chair / Senior Physician Executive

Job Summary

The Medical Director of Inpatient Obstetrics reports directly to the Chair/Senior Physician Executive and provides strategic and clinical leadership for inpatient obstetric services. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing clinical quality improvement initiatives, including Maternal Levels of Care. The Director leads efforts to enhance patient safety, quality, and satisfaction, ensuring that departmental goals align with the broader objectives of the practice and the health network. This position combines administrative oversight with active clinical practice and promotes evidence-based care and continuous professional development among providers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership & Clinical Responsibilities

  • Serve as a physician leader, ensuring the highest clinical standards across inpatient obstetric services.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain evidence-based clinical policies, procedures, and care standards.

  • Oversee quality management, utilization review, and performance improvement initiatives.

  • Analyze clinical data to inform care decisions and report outcomes to leadership.

  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and excellence in patient care.

  • Provide feedback and mentorship to physicians not meeting practice or quality benchmarks.

  • Collaborate with maternal-fetal medicine, neonatal intensive care, and pediatric leadership to optimize perinatal and newborn outcomes.

  • Lead interdepartmental quality and safety initiatives, protocol development, and best-practice integration.

  • Monitor and improve patient experience within Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby units.

  • Educate obstetric providers on hospital-wide practice standards and clinical updates.

  • Track key metrics, identify trends, and implement performance improvement strategies.

Supervisory, Academic & Research Responsibilities

  • Participate in annual evaluations and performance reviews for departmental providers.

  • Mentor and coach providers to meet quality, behavioral, and operational expectations.

  • Supervise Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.

  • Support Performance Improvement Programs, Peer Review Committees, and regulatory audits.

  • Oversee medical students, residents, and other trainees rotating through inpatient obstetrics.

  • Address and resolve patient complaints through data tracking and root-cause analysis.

  • Promote a patient-centered care culture and manage provider leave to maintain operational efficiency.

Administrative & Community Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with practice leadership to develop and execute strategic and operational plans.

  • Contribute to compliance with all federal and state regulations impacting obstetric services.

  • Participate in institutional committees and system-wide quality improvement programs.

  • Monitor and enhance patient and provider satisfaction, implementing improvements as needed.

  • Represent the practice in professional organizations and community initiatives.

  • Serve as a community resource and ambassador for maternal health excellence.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.

  • Completed residency and/or fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

  • Current or eligible for an unrestricted medical license in the state of practice.

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
