Job Description

Anticipated Salary: Teacher Pay Scale + two weeks' salary

Time Off Plan: 6 weeks of summer break, 10 days of PTO, all school holidays off per school calendar.

The JAG Specialist is a state certified teacher and/or alternatively certified CTE Teacher responsible for delivering specific course content in an on-line environment. The JAG Specialist must also provide instruction, support and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students’ individual needs. Teachers monitor student progress through K12’s learning management system, and work actively with students and parents to advance each student's learning and to develop and monitor a plan for post-secondary success via online tools like Career Builder, Career Cruising, etc.

    • Provides appropriate curriculum and ensures students achieve specific JAG competencies through classroom instruction; teaches through a variety of methods including project-based learning, lecture, hands-on activities, and team teaching; tailors the program and teaching methods for the needs of each specific student and implements an intervention strategy for each participant using an Individualized Development Plan. 

    • Ensures an appropriate pool of students by directly recruiting students and obtaining referrals from an in school Advisory Committee consisting of school personnel; holds interviews with prospective candidates and those making referrals to determine, using JAG guidelines, the appropriateness of the prospective student for the program. 

    • Administers testing programs including JAG pre-/post-assessments and career interest surveys.

    • Ensures positive perceptions of the JAG-SC program within schools by developing and maintaining positive, effective working relationships with school personnel including teachers, administrators, students, and members of the in-school Advisory Committee. 

    • Advocates for the program and develops a pool of effective community support resources by working with employers, parents, civic groups, and legislators to build awareness of and support for the program; develops job opportunities, participates in public relations activities, attends meetings and speaks to various community groups.

    • Builds appreciation for teamwork, sense of belonging, and commitment to community service among JAG SC students by organizing and serving as advisor to a JAG-SC Career Association; creates training opportunities through hands-on activities, film presentations, guest speakers, and workshops; assists with civic and social opportunities.

    • Provides students with guidance, counseling, and support within appropriate limits; refers students to additional support services on an as-needed basis; takes responsibility for learning and complying with school policies such as mandated reporting, discipline, attendance, and the like. 

    • Complies with all JAG documentation requirements in a timely fashion including contacts and activities involving students, employers, and other groups; develops and maintains a well-organized filing system. 

    • Records information and data daily using the online electronic National Data Management System (e NDMS). 

    • Assists students in finding and maintaining quality employment and/or post-secondary educational programs upon graduation; works closely with students and employers for 12 months after the end of the school year to ensure a satisfactory employment outcome; develops a plan for contacts with non graduates to ensure effective transition to employment or additional education. 

    • Participates in staff, regional, and national statewide meetings, and staff development activities. 

    Relationship Building 

    • Establishes and maintains positive rapport with families and regularly communicates with students and learning coaches/parents; 

    • Elementary and Middle School Teachers support learning coaches/parents with student curricular and instructional issues in a virtual classroom environment that is in line with academy policies and procedures;

    • Supports students and learning coaches with the set-up and maintenance of their learning environment including basic computer troubleshooting; 

    • Understands how both diverse and unique characteristics of students and their families impact required support; 

    • Works collaboratively with other teachers to ensure that all students are successfully progressing through the program, that parents have a central point of contact, and that tasks are distributed among the stakeholders; 

    • Responds to students, parents, and colleagues in a timely manner.

    Other Essential Functions 

    • Performs various school-related functions such as designated by the school principal. 

    • Participates in field trips. 

    • Completes special projects and other projects/duties as assigned by JAG-SC Director. 

    • Organizes social and educational activities for students and families, including sponsorship of virtual clubs, outings, marketing events or other extracurricular activities as required;

    • Travels to testing sites to proctor state exams.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in social service, counseling, business, education, or a related discipline is preferred

  • Valid SC teaching certification
  •  

    Experience working with youth accompanied by knowledge of child development issues AND
  • Skills in human relations, leadership, supervision, and motivational techniques AND
  • Ability to work twelve (12) months per year OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Pedagogical knowledge of content being taught and ability to apply critical thinking
  • Ability to develop curriculum and educational opportunities consistent with the JAG Model. 9.
  • Ability to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes
  • Ability to problem solve independently and have a high level of organization
  • Understanding of interdependency of deadlines on multiple projects and able to act to preserve integrity on other people's deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week
  • Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 8-4 or as defined by the school
  • Ability to travel as required (on average once per month and/or approximately 10% of the time) for face to face professional development, student testing, and as required by school
  • Access to reliable high-speed internet
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word; PowerPoint;
  • Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new technologies and teaching platforms
  • Ability to maintain teacher certification/professional development hours and fluency in K12 systems, programs and curriculum
  • Ability to clear required background check

 

Preferred Education and/or Experience

  • Experience working with proposed age group

  • Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology

  • Experience working in a virtual environment

  • Experience teaching in an online (virtual) and/or in a brick and mortar environment

  • Experience with Blackboard Collaborative, Newrow, or other online platforms

Location

All staff must reside in the state of South Carolina.

This position is remote with the following travel expectations:

  • Attend local student outing 1-2 times per semester

  • Attend in-person professional development 1-3 times per semester

  • Attend back-to-school professional development in July (1-3 consecutive days)

  • Participate in in-person student testing 

  • Additional details on travel will be provided in the interview process
