Position Summary

The Nurse Manager – Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) is a licensed Registered Nurse responsible for the clinical oversight, supervision, and operational leadership of the psychiatric nursing team within the 24/7 CSU in Indio, California. This role ensures high-quality, trauma-informed, culturally responsive psychiatric care for adults and youth experiencing acute mental health crises, many with co-occurring substance use and medical needs.

The Nurse Manager Provides

  • Clinical leadership for Psych RNs, LVNs (if applicable), and other clinical support staff
  • Operational oversight of CSU workflows, safety practices, and regulatory compliance
  • Collaboration with APPs, therapists, social workers, peer specialists, and county partners
  • Direct patient care, particularly during high-acuity periods
  • Quality improvement, training, and policy implementation for CSU services

This position requires strong clinical judgment, management skills, crisis response expertise, and the ability to ensure seamless care in a high-acuity, fast-paced psychiatric urgent care environment.

They will work closely with the CSU Medical Director to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care is provided at the CSU and facilitate seamless care delivery within the multidisciplinary team, which includes behavioral health professionals, community health workers (CHWs), and advanced psychiatric providers (APPs), RNs, LVNs, MAs and others.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Leadership & Oversight
  • Provide clinical supervision and daily oversight to CSU Psychiatric RNs and clinical support staff.
  • Ensure high-quality nursing assessments, medication administration, crisis interventions, and documentation.
  • Serve as the primary on-site clinical leader during assigned shifts, providing guidance in psychiatric emergencies, de-escalation, and involuntary hold processes.
  • Support APPs during psychiatric evaluations by collecting clinical data, coordinating care, and monitoring changes.
  • Establish and maintain clinical workflows that align with county behavioral health standards, CSU protocols, HIPAA, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform direct clinical care (˜20% of role or as determined by site need) including assessments, medication administration, monitoring, and crisis intervention.
  • Operational Management of the CSU
  • With Site Director, oversee day-to-day CSU clinical operations, staffing, and assignment of nursing resources.
  • Ensure environmental, patient, and staff safety through routine safety checks and adherence to CSU protocols.
  • Maintain oversight of medication storage, handling, ordering, and reconciliation following CDC, state, and WEA policies.
  • Ensure clinical supplies, equipment, and documentation systems (EHR) support optimal patient care.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager on scheduling, workflow optimization, supply chain, and operational needs.
  • Crisis Response & Clinical Support
  • Lead clinical response to behavioral emergencies, agitation, medical decline, and acute safety concerns.
  • Support de-escalation using trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and culturally responsive approaches.
  • Guide nursing staff on protocols for involuntary psychiatric holds, medical transfers, and emergency interventions.
  • Serve as an interdisciplinary resource for clinical decision-making during psychiatric crises.
  • Staff Supervision, Training & Development
  • Directly supervise CSU RNs—including orientation, scheduling, performance evaluations, corrective action, and professional development.
  • Ensure staff competence through training in psychiatric nursing skills, medication administration, safety intervention (CPI/SAMA/MAB), infection control, and EHR documentation.
  • Support onboarding of new team members and ongoing skill development aligned with CSU needs.
  • Foster a supportive, collaborative team environment grounded in WEA’s mission and equity values.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Care Coordination
  • Work collaboratively with APPs, therapists, social workers, case managers, peer support specialists, and county partners during stabilization and discharge planning.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, shift huddles, and care planning discussions.
  • Serve as the nursing representative in coordination with county behavioral health, hospitals, EMS, and community organizations.
  • Communicate clinical updates, safety concerns, and care recommendations promptly across disciplines.
  • Quality Improvement, Compliance & Documentation
  • With Director of Nursing, lead CSU quality improvement initiatives related to patient safety, clinical outcomes, and workflow efficiency.
  • Support preparation for county, state, and federal audits or monitoring visits.
  • Ensure compliance with all documentation standards in the EHR, including assessments, interventions, medications, and safety events.
  • Assist in policy development, revision of CSU protocols, and implementation of new clinical guidelines.
  • Uphold HIPAA, confidentiality policies, and WEA’s internal compliance expectations.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Active, unrestricted California RN license required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Minimum 2 years of psychiatric, crisis, emergency, or inpatient behavioral health nursing.
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory or charge nurse experience strongly preferred.
  • CPI/MAB/SAMA or similar crisis intervention certification (or obtained within 3 months of hire).
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Experience with care coordination, crisis stabilization, or behavioral health systems preferred.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records.
  • Understanding of involuntary treatment laws, trauma-informed care, and harm-reduction strategies.
