Under general direction of the Chief of Plant Operations, the Chief Engineer I leads a crew of Stationary Engineers, Maintenance Mechanics, and Electrician in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems, including a central chiller plant, and other mechanical and power equipment at the California School for the Deaf, Riverside.

The incumbent will adhere to Department policies, rules and procedures, contract monitoring, submit administrative requests including leave, travel, and training in a timely and appropriate manner; accurately report time, and submit time sheets by the due date. Will work to ensure that health and safety requirements are given the highest priority for job completion. Will provide input and perform duties related to campus projects, construction, and repair work. May assist the Building Trades Supervisor and Chief of Plant Operations in acquiring quotes and submitting requisitions for materials and supplies. Responsible in part for keeping tools and equipment in good condition, maintains records, and prepares reports. Works individually or with others performing tasks related to facilities HVAC maintenance.

Work schedule: 0600-1430 M-F, however may be required to work outside of normal business hours to provide continuity of operations.

Working Conditions

Subject to fingerprinting and criminal record clearance by the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation and Tuberculosis clearance. This position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.

**EXAMINATION**

Individuals must have transfer eligiblity or have taken and passed an examination to obtain list eligibility for the classification in order to apply.  List eligibility may be obtained by meeting the minimum qualifications as outlined in the examination bulletin, and obtaining a passing score on the exam. Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Possession of EPA 608 certification.

  • Strong engineering aptitude and an understanding of maintenance, operations, and HVAC maintenance and repair in a school campus, or facility setting.

  • Experience with purchasing, contracts, invoice approval, and record keeping. Working knowledge of FI$Cal and Microsoft Office preferred.

  • Be a team player with the ability to make sound decisions in identifying problems and finding resolutions.

  • Ability to exercise initiative, independence, and lead engineering, mechanical, and electrical staff.

  • Experience working in a school facility or campus setting.

  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), or willingness to learn
